The department of Pharmacognosy has a rich history and tradition. The department was organized in 1939, it was headed by the candidate of biological science I.P. Borodin. At this time, there were not any special pharmacists in the department. From 1940 until 1982 more than 40 year the head of the department was Honored Worker of Science, Doctor of Pharmaceutical science, professor R.L.Khazanovich. In 1982, the head of the department was the candidate of pharmaceutical sciences, assistant professor Nuria Zaynutdinovna Alimkhodjaeva, later in 1983-1986 was Honored Worker of Science, Doctor of Pharmaceutical science, professor Khamid Kholmatovich Kholmatov, in 1986-1994 was Doctor of Pharmaceutical science, professor Toshoy Pulatovna Pulatova, in 1994-2011 was Doctor of Pharmaceutical science, professor Khodjiasror Masudovich Kamilov.
From 2011 until the present time, the head of the department is Doctor of Pharmaceutical science, professor Flyura Faridovna Urmanova. The department of botany joined the department of Pharmacognosy in 2013. Nowadays, 3 doctors of pharmaceutical sciences, professors, 8 candidates of pharmaceutical sciences, assistant professors, 1 senior teacher, 4 assistants and 4 people in teaching and support staff work at the department.

- Study of the most widely spread folk medicine, medicinal plants of Uzbekistan in order to implement their in medical practice
- Development of new effective medicines based on medicinal plants allowed in medical practice, including studied at the department.
- Cultivation of valuable medicinal plants.
Conducted scientific and methodical work at the department:
There are created all conditions for carrying out scientific and educational-methodical research works at the department. Developed innovative educational technologies in all teaching subjects, which are incorporated in the work programs.
The department is equipped with textbooks and educational-methodical textbooks of new generation, including foreign literature. Prof. Kh.Kh.Kholmatova and U.A.Akhmedova awarded diplomas of the first and second degree at the Republican contest “The best textbook of the year” for III and IV published textbook of “Pharmacognosy”. The lecture and laboratory classes are held at the department using modern innovative educational technologies, which are the great importance for preparing of future specialists. Teaching practice of Pharmacognosy and Botany carried out on educational and industrial base of the Institute in the village of Chimgan, in the Botanical Garden of the Institute of the gene pool of flora and fauna ASRUz, as well as the experienced area for the cultivation of medicinal plants.
Since 2005, at the department began preparing masters on a specialty pharmaceutical chemistry and pharmacognosy. Each year conducts successful defense of master’s theses, the topics and the results of which are focused on the production. The teachers improve their skills abroad, in particular in the United Kingdom, Denmark, Israel, Turkey, Pakistan, the Russian Federation, Ukraine and Kazakhstan, are actively involved in the modernization of the educational process and teaching – methodological work. In order to develop abilities of gifted students at the department of organized clubs SSS and “Pharmacognosy”, where they learn modern analytical methods in the study of medicinal plants, as well as acquire the skills to conduct research. They take prize places in holding the annually traditional student scientific conferences.
